Why is it a must to have an Intimacy Coordinator?

Hiring an IC is the best way to put everyone at ease and avoid the fallout of crossed boundaries.

No one wants to feel unsafe, threatened, or disempowered at work. Inherent in the actor-director relationship is a unbalanced power dynamic. As an actor myself, I know saying no to a director is hard. This is where having an intimacy coordinator comes in.

The intimacy coordinator works with the actors and director,

separately at first, to --

1) learn from the director the creative vision for the scene, then

2) understand actor boundaries.

With this information, the intimacy coordinator facilitates a dialogue between the parties in which they negotiate an outcome that appeals to both the director's vision and the actors' comfort level.

Having an intimacy coordinator enables actors to feel confident their boundaries will be honored and respected and ensures production runs smoothly on the day.

Feeling safe at work also includes deterring harassment, especially when dealing with intimate material. Part of an IC's process is to discuss with each of the actors appropriate behavior between takes to make sure everyone is comfortable. The IC is also available during the shoot to talk to crew members if someone's behavior is inappropriate and/or affecting the work.

What does an Intimacy Coordinator do?

An intimacy coordinator ensures the process of filming intimate scenes goes smoothly, both behind the camera and on the screen.

Services include

  • Facilitating dialogue between the actors and director about their comfort level with the intimate content of a scene

  • Making sure that during the filming of a scene the boundaries of the actors are not being crossed and that they remain safe throughout, both physically and emotionally

  • Providing a safer environment in which actors can do their work

  • Ensuring that closed set and SAG-AFTRA intimacy guidelines are followed

  • Serving as an on-set advocate and ally for LGBTQIA+ cast members

  • Choreographing and providing movement coaching for simulated sex scenes to enhance believability, when requested to do so by the director

  • Coordinating with departments such as costumes and makeup to make sure that the actors are provided with appropriate nudity garments and prosthetics
